How to Prepare Your Snowmobile for Summer Storage

Please, don’t kill the messenger. After all, you knew this day was coming. It’s almost May. It’s time to put your sled away until next year.

We know, we know. But your snowmobile will be back to braaap another day…provided you store it away properly now.

You could have your dealer ready your sled for storage, but it’s easy enough to do yourself. Every snowmobiler has a different take on which steps are really necessary, but here’s a handy checklist of the most common steps:

Check your owner’s manual. Some snowmobiles have parts that require special attention.
Repair any damage or general wear and tear from the season (if you got out enough to have any!)
Drain the fuel from the machine, or fill it up and use a fuel stabilizer Drain fuel from carburetor.
Give her a good last wash and wax to remove any salt or other harmful substances.
Spray fogging oil into the cylinders to prevent corrosion.
Disconnect the battery. Consider using a battery maintainer or give it a light charge monthly.
Jack it up to avoid moisture and keep weight off the suspension.
Grease lube points on the suspension and chassis.
Remove the belt, store it unrolled.
Clean the clutches.
Loosen the suspension.
Block exhaust, air intake, cooling holes and any other openings to keep animals out.
Store your sled in a dry place is protected from the elements and pests, and consider covering it.
